It is known that Hellen and the Romans also used the perfume, which was named after the city of Mendes in the Egyptian Delta and was first thought to have been made in this region. Pliny noted that the materials that make up this perfume are behen oil, pine gum and myrrh. Another author of Antiquity, who tells about the materials of this perfume we are talking about, is Dioscorides. Dioscorides, unlike Pliny, also added Chinese cinnamon to the mixture. He explained that the reason he added Chinese cinnamon was to make the mixture smell strong.
